About

James F. Lucas III, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian with more than 15 years of experience in clinical nutrition, wound care, oncology, and sports nutrition. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut, where he also minored in Nutrition for Sport & Exercise, and went on to complete a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology at Southern Connecticut State University. His dietetic internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital, affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine, provided him with a strong foundation in medical nutrition therapy, the Nutrition Care Process, and interdisciplinary clinical care.

James’s career has spanned a wide range of practice settings, from outpatient oncology and multidisciplinary cancer care to clinical research and hospital-based nutrition initiatives. At Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale, he developed evidence-based nutrition protocols, authored patient education materials, and conducted original research on the effects of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. His work included designing interventions to support patients with malnutrition, optimizing quality of life during cancer treatment, and training the next generation of dietitians through preceptorship.

Drawing on his expertise in wound care, malnutrition, and exercise physiology, James continues to advocate for nutrition across the continuum of care. He has presented and attended several professional conferences, authored his own recipe book "Hip Hop Nutrition: Volume 1", and has worked collaboratively with hospital leadership to implement evidence based nutrition practices to improve hospital and patient outcomes. Passionate about evidence-based nutrition, James is committed to improving patient outcomes, reducing complications, and promoting health through the power of nutrition.
